Mainsheet Technical Articles?

Tom Sokoloski

Hello All,
It's that time again that I'm looking for C400 tech articles to run in the next Mainsheet Magazine. You don't have to be a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, or the most brilliant engineer in the world. Have an upgrade you've done recently to you pride and joy? Solved a problem that's been bugging you for a while?  Jot it down and send it to me. I can help with editing, formatting, etc. A picture or two would be great, too. Time's running out. Act now! It's YOUR magazine and association.

I can tell more on here or text is better so I can send pics.
We stay on the hook full time and we hate going to land so with the virus and works falling apart, I wanted to get more self sustainable. I bought a membrane and pump for a watermaker. I’m in the process of buying fittings, hoses and gauges.
I also decided fresh eggs would be nice and chickens coukd be good pets.

Larissa wasn’t happy with that and the anxiety she had landed her on the dock. A week later I picked her up and we’ve been sailing for about 6 or 8 weeks with four Muscovy ducks. We put a Craigslist add up and a couple girls that crew on a sailing charter boat met me at the beach and took mr Rogers and marshmallow.
So we have Lilly belle and Donald now.
Taking care of them has been incredibly easy. They made four crossings and we did have duck overboard s while under sail.
I’m still patiently waiting for eggs but I’m calling it a success.  Larissa loves the ducks now.

I had a portable ac. Onboard that i coukdnt fix. I had the cover off and it made for a great “cage” we have cleated the ac dome off at the top of the dinghy Davit on the port Side  There’s not a front door to the cage. They sit on top or inside.

We feed and water them in the am. Once they’re done eating, we drop the cage down, they swim out, poop, we leave the cage submerged to clean it in the ocean as the ducks do a few laps around the boat.
I have a duck overboard ladder they can jump off and climb up anytime.
Sometimes while anchored downstairs, mr Rogers and or Lilly belle would jump in the ocean and climb on the stern, walk forward and scare us as they stared at us wondering why they didn’t have water.

I keep a barrel with soil. They sit on the lid of the barrel and fertilize the coconut tree and different veggies we planted.

They only need us to pick them up from the deck to their hanging cage, feed and water them.

I am a huge believer and supporter of Catalina 400. I have abused my boat sailing in violent conditions here in Hawaii.
I’ve owned Kolea for two years and always on the hook. We try to stay offgrid for three months minimum hiding from wind and running out and around to explore the Winward dangerous sailing areas that normally get pounded with wind and accelerated currents wanting to pull you to really really dark black sharp lava mountains.

I have a mod that might be of interest for folks using an asymmetrical sail.  I had Garhauer make  a modification to the bow roller that you had them build that allows you to connect the tack of the sail to the bow roller while anchoring the bottom of the roller to the bow of the boat.

Let me know if that might be of interest and I'll put together a write up with pics.
