Hi all
I have used Peter Conrad and he reps Sobsted Sails. pgconrad99@.... I had him build several sails for me, a furling main and a jib and his quotes were great. I have used his sails for a couple of years and the service and the sails have been great. The jib he built was a radial design 135 Jib with foam at the foil and the foot of the sail was marked where to roll it up to for a 125 and a 100% size. I cannot find the quote for the jib but as I remember it was about $2300 a little more than half the price quoted to me by my local North Sails loft at the time. I have used the main for 4 years and it has performed well. I could have gotten vertical battens but I chickened out. I should have ordered it.

Just as a reference point. Just sold a 135 headsail to one of the group 7.77 oz challenge Marblehead premium Dacron cloth Foam luff Sunbrella UV Mitre Cut vs Cross Cut $3010 plus $30 S&H =$3040 No Sales Tax so net
Tasker has the largest loft in the world building sails offshore for just about everyone and doing it cheaply. In some cases the only thing on the sail that is Doyle or Quantum is the patch. You get what you pay for. Our sails are made in the USA in Stuart Fla.
Candidly our problem is getting parts and material like every other business so we’re out 10 weeks on delivery. If you want something quick try Catalina direct but your getting a cheap production sail. But might work for you.
Best of luck.

My 2 cents for all that it's worth.
If I were looking for a new headsail I'd take Chic's offer in a heartbeat. My experience with well-made mitre cut headsails has always left me thinking why did sailmakers change to crosscut and then radial. Crosscut is fast out of the bag but the draft moves aft steadily. Radial is fine but there are only 2 or 3 dacron sailcloths that should be used and they are spendy. Mitre cut deals with those issues well especially when a balanced sailcloth like Marblehead LA is used. I had a 20+ year old Ratsey and Lapthorn mitre cut Number 2 genoa on a Westerly Oceanlord tears back that could still drive the boat with very little heeling, the draft had hardly moved aft.
It sounds like most here want a good compromise headsail and what Chic spec'd is a very good example of that. Personally, I'd go with a 120 in the same weight as the main, cut for up wind work and add a lighter weight downwind sail on a top-down furler, but I always hated listening to the diesel.

No problem glad to help get members an up to date quote if interested. The point of mitre vs cross cut is spot on. Manufacturers look at sails as line item on spreadsheet, the lower the price the bigger the bottom line. A crosscut sail stretches first time out of the bag because all panels are on the same bias. A mitre cut changes the bias on the main power panels so it holds shape better and stretches “less” over time. But with this said, crosscut sails are faster and easier to run down the line and also have significantly less scrap. Hence the lower price for the manufacturer.

pgconrad99@....
I cannot find the quote for the jib but as I remember it was about $2300 a little more than half the price
quoted to me by my local North Sails loft at the time. I have used the main for 4 years and it has performed well. I could have gotten vertical battens but I chickened out. I should have ordered it.

C400 Colleagues:
On the subject of head sails, 155s and 135s; it seems to me that no matter how I position the cars on the genoa tracks, the aft end of the 155 always
‘curls’ inward disrupting airflow and, thereby, decreasing sail efficiency. This occurs because the 155 is too big for the C400 when using the genoa tracks. I’m concluding that a 135 will not display this same
‘curled’ sail shape thereby increasing efficiency and boat speed.
HOWEVER, it also seems to me that there is a way to utilize the 155 efficiently aboard the C400. If we run the sheets from the sail directly to blocks mounted on
the toe rails BEHIND the helm stations, then back to the primary winches, we will eliminate sail
‘curl’, achieve proper sail shape and, therefore, increase efficiency and boat speed. The additional sail area of the 155 can, then, be utilized effectively and efficiently aboard the C400. This procedure does not use the genoa tracks at all with the
155.
…looking forward to receiving ideas, thoughts, suggestions, input, etc.

Frank,
What you suggest will work but you'll probably need a barber hauler as well to properly trim the headsail. Pulling from that far aft will mostly tension the foot, the barber hauler will tension the leech.

I also bought my sailboat to sail and hate when I have to turn on the engine. However, I went a similar, but different route. I sail in Puget Sound, which my sailmaker describes as "sailing in a hallway". We're either going straight upwind or straight downwind. The summer tends to be pretty light and the offseason can be pretty windy, although there are frequent exceptions. I also sail short handed, so I know I won't do a full headsail change frequently.
So, I actually have my #3 rigged on the furler and sheeted to the inner tracks. With this sail, once I hit around 10 or 12 knots true, I find that my boat speed is almost as good as with my #1, but I point a bit higher. I haven't done any real hardcore analysis, but it feels like my VMG is better upwind. For downwind the previous owner installed a selden removable sprit and I fly an A2 out of a sock when it's 3-20 knots. (I also have an A3, from the previous owner, which I rarely use.) Once we're past 20 knots true, I'm fine with white sails.
So, that leaves the light upwind work. I reinforced the sprit with a bobstay and had my sailmaker make a "J0". Since I don't race my boat, I ignored all the rating rules and the sail is cut like a genoa that's 155 measured with the sprit. It sheets back by the stern mooring cleats and I can adjust the lead with snatch blocks further up the toe rail. I find I can sail 50-55 degrees true with this sail, and the boat will get moving in 3-4 knots of true wind. It really shines in about 8 knots true. This sail's on a furler, which makes it easy to hoist and douse short handed. The main downside is that I have to furl to tack.
I'm sure this isn't the optimal approach for speed, but I find it's a good compromise for how I use the boat. The #3 works in all conditions that I see, but I can relatively easily add the J0 when the conditions are right and I'm willing to deal with the extra rigging.

Craig,
That sounds like a great setup especially since you can use the inner tracks for upwind. Those snatch blocks further up the toe rail are what I referred to as a barber hauler.
