Best combo steaming/deck light?

Fritz Feiten

I’m replacing the standing rigging on my 1997 C400 and taking care of some other things while the mast is out of the boat (VHF/AIS antenna, new wind speed/direction, new LED anchor light, etc.). Also replacing the combo steaming/deck light. The boat has what I assume is the original Aqua Signal “classic” which IMHO is junk.

Has anyone found a robust replacement they really like? On previous boats I had spreader lights, which I like but not enough to deal with wiring them. Wish there was a combo light that wrapped a few LEDs around the sides of the mast to illuminate the side decks a bit, but have not found one.

Fritz,
A buddy of mine, who owns a different kind of boat, used the wiring of his deck light to do exactly what you are talking about. From behind the deck/steaming light fixture, he ran small wires a few inches to the outboard sides of the mast. He used those wires to power small LED lights, facing downward. The deck light lights up the foredeck, and the small LED lights light up the side decks very well. He's never had any problems with them, as they are very low profile, and don't snag on anything. Hope this helps.

Tom, any chance your friend has some photos of the install or info about the added LED lights?  I suspect others may also be interested.

Tom,
I'm putting a spinnaker track on the front of my mast and have to move the deck/steaming light above my radar to get it to fit.  I'm scheduled to put the mast back in the boat tomorrow.
If your buddy could share the details and/or type of lights he used it would be a big help to me.  we originally were going to put spreader lights on but that has too many issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He sold the boat, but I'll ask if he has any pix.

Mark, I think a deck light above the radar is a bad idea. Another friend did that and hated it. Lights up everything except the deck.

Tom,
I agree with you, but there's not enough room with moving the radar which isn't in the cards.  I was hoping to install side lights like your friend did to light up the deck.
Do you know which LED lights he used on the side of the mast?

Thanks
Mark
