C400 Stanchions
Frank Falcone
C400 Colleagues:
Can any of you offer some guidance and/or advice based on experience with REBEDDING C400 deck stanchions? I need to rebed at least 1 stanchion, maybe 2, and I’m wondering if I can complete that entire project from topside. If the stanchions are bolted into backing plates which are molded into the fiberglas deck below the surface of the deck; then, I think it’s possible to do the rebedding without worrying about removing nuts, washers, etc. from below the deck. It’s really hard, almost impossible, to reach the bolts from under the deck.
Any guidance and/or advice would be great!
Thanks so much!

I have removed all of the stanchion bolts, gooped them up with Lanocote (or Tef-Gel), and replaced them. This will hopefully reduce any issues with galvanic corrosion over time. I had no issues, assuming all along that the inboard bolts are going into embedded aluminum plates. The outboard bolts are obviously going into the toe rail. I have Catalina 400#80 and they do not use nuts but in my experience they are in backing plates or screwed into the fiberglass. If you unscrew from a backing place it could be difficult as a stainless steel screw will weld itself to an aluminum backing plate

Over the years. And you could break the screw. The ones screwed into fiberglass are easier to get out. Dave Z. On Jul 28, 2020, at 10:49 AM, Frank Falcone <frank.falcone@...> wrote:

I also have a bent stanchion (gate stanchion). I have looked at all of Catalina Direct's stanchion photos and none look like mine. Mine has an offset in the foot of it, where it straddles the toe-rail and the side deck.
In regards to re-bedding...I have had this stanchion off and I ended up thru drilling the holes and replacing the wood screws. I used some long 1/4"-20 SS screws with fender washers & nuts on the underside. I accessed them (very difficult) from the cove lighting recess in the aft cabin. As always I used "Bed-It" brand butyl tape. |

Ryck, I replaced my bent ones with new from Catalina Direct.
Happy with the new ones after two years.

Check out Garhauer Marine. I think they're the OEM for Stanchions as well as a lot of other C400 things

Mine looks alot like Garhauer #ST-58, except with an offset bend in the mounting plate. I do not see anything like mine on Catalina Direct or Garhauer but, the Garhauer website says they will "weld them to order" which is a good sign. I may end up pulling mine off and shipping it to Garhauer. They can fab a new one using my offset plate or put the bend in one of their plates. Either way its good info...thanks.
BTW...I searched Google images for Catalina stanchion photos. I found several different hull-to-deck arrangements on the C400. My C400 is hull #096, (1997 Mk I). It has no bulwarks and the stanchions do not sit fully inboard of the toe rail, like most I saw online. Instead the stanchions have two outboard screws that go THROUGH the toe rail, and two inboard screws that penetrate the fiberglass. This is why the mounting plates have the offset bend, (to account for the extra thickness of the aluminum toe rail extrusion). It may have been a brief experimentation by Catalina, or something.j |

Offset stanchions I have ordered the stanchions with the offset base from Calalina Factory Parts in Fla. When I ordered them they were a stock item. Send a picture and description. My boat S/N 169 MK II has the offset bend for mounting on the toe rail and deck.
